Most small businesses don’t fail at digital marketing because they pick the wrong tactic. They fail because they try every tactic at once, measure nothing, and give up before anything compounds. This playbook keeps it simple: one goal, one audience, two or three channels, and a monthly review.
1. Start with one measurable goal
“Get more customers” isn’t a goal you can manage. “Book 20 discovery calls a month” or “sell 150 units through the website each month” is. Pick one number that matters to revenue and write it at the top of your plan.
2. Describe the customer in one paragraph
Who buys from you today, what problem made them look for a solution, and where did they look first? Talk to five recent customers if you can. You will usually find two or three phrases they all use — those become your headlines, ad copy and keywords.
3. Choose two or three channels, not ten
Match channels to intent:
- Search (SEO and Google Ads) — people already looking for what you sell.
- Social media — building awareness and trust over time.
- Email — turning one-time visitors into repeat buyers, at almost no cost per send.
If you have a small budget, pair one “demand capture” channel (search) with one “owned” channel (email). Add social once those are working.
4. Set a budget you can hold for 90 days
Paid channels need time and data to optimise. A smaller budget you keep for three months will teach you more than a big budget you pull after two weeks. Use the ROAS & Break-even Calculator to find the minimum return you need before you start.
5. Track everything with UTM links
Tag every link you share — in emails, social posts, bios and partner sites — so your analytics tell you which effort produced which sale. Our UTM Link Builder makes this a 10-second job.
6. Review monthly, change one thing at a time
Once a month, compare results against your goal and the previous month. Keep what works, cut what clearly doesn’t, and test one change at a time so you know what caused the difference. Work out the return on each channel with the Marketing ROI Calculator.
Quick recap
- One measurable goal.
- A one-paragraph customer description.
- Two or three channels matched to intent.
- A 90-day budget.
- UTM tracking on every link.
- A monthly review.
That’s it. Boring, consistent execution beats clever tactics every time.
