Follower count tells you how many people could see your posts. Engagement rate tells you how many actually cared. It’s the better number to track week to week.
The two common formulas
By followers: (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100.
By reach: (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ reach × 100. This is often more accurate, because it only counts people who actually saw the post.
Plug your numbers into our free Engagement Rate Calculator to get both instantly.
What is a “good” engagement rate?
It varies a lot by platform, niche and audience size — smaller accounts usually see higher rates. Rather than chasing an industry average, compare yourself with your own last 30 days and aim to improve steadily.
Seven ways to improve it
- Hook in the first line — the preview is all most people see.
- Post fewer, better pieces instead of filling a calendar.
- Ask a specific question rather than “thoughts?”
- Make saveable content: checklists, templates and how-tos.
- Reply to every comment in the first hour.
- Use native formats — carousels, short video and polls where they fit.
- Test headlines for your captions with the Headline Analyzer.
Track it properly
Record your engagement rate weekly in a simple sheet alongside what you posted. After a month, patterns appear: the topics, formats and times your audience responds to most.
